How the Miu Miu skirt set became 2022’s ultimate status symbol

There is a new status symbol for fashion’s favourite ladies. Have you – or have you not – been photographed in that Miu Miu skirt set?

If you have managed to miss the look popping up every time you open Instagram, the Miu Miu set refers to the group of SS22 designs by Mrs Prada, which stole the show during the SS22 collections last October. Specifically, one chino skirt chopped high enough the whites of its pockets poke out, which chimed perfectly with the Y2K, low waist mini craze of today.

It was paired with matching belted tube tops, or shirts and pullovers sliced to reveal the under boob. The catwalk served school uniform chic, and was at the same time mundane and ultra-sexy. Now it has been shipped off globally, and each day seems to bring a new rendition of the set in action, modelled by someone equally influential.

We are talking Nicole Kidman’s Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue cover, styled by Katie Grand and Paloma Elsesser fronting the new i-D magazine. Hailey Bieber is the face (body?) of the Miu Miu campaign, Chiara Ferragni has posted it on Instagram and Emily Ratajkowski wore the long, navy skirt version to the CFDA awards.

Then there was Zendaya rocking it for her Interview magazine feature, and, just last night, Emma Corrin posted a film of her in the full look to her followers with the caption: “I know you think you’ve seen this skirt before but you actually haven’t.”

The effects have been felt so strongly the barely-there outfit has even earned its own Instagram account @miumiuset, dedicated to documenting each of its high profile outings (which by the looks of things, are only set to continue). Global fashion platform Lyst has released data revealing there are 900 searches per day for the Miu Miu skirt.

Naturally, all this attention has spawned a few memes too, with people declaring “that Miu Miu set getting passed around like a blunt,” as well as @thekimbino’s image of American fast fashion retailer Fashion Nova’s rip off circulating, with the caption: “Honey we’ve got a big storm coming.”

With all things that fly in fashion though, the replacement is never far away. On Wednesday, the opening day of Milan Fashion Week, Glenn Martens’ debut show for Diesel saw another miniscule skirt hold attention. Introducing the Diesel belt skirt, which came in bright red and distressed brown leather, which has been quickly dubbed the Miu Miu set’s biggest rival.

Time will tell if it really does hold the power to compete.
