How the final Six Nations table is expected to look as champions Wales completely written off in title defence

Wales are being completely written off for the Six Nations even though they are the defending champions and have three matches in front of their own passionate Cardiff crowd.

Wayne Pivac's side are ranked as 11-2 outsiders to lift the title again.

You can even get them at a tasty 25-1 to win the Triple Crown once more and as much as 40-1 for the Grand Slam.

Bookmakers reckon Wales trail well behind favourites France (6-4), Eddie Jones' England (5-2) and opening day opponents Ireland (9-2) when it comes to the likely title winners this time around.

Resurgent Scotland are ranked below Wales at 10-1, with Italy 1,000-1 - although some will feel that might as well be one million.

As was the case last season, much will hinge upon Wales' February 5 opener with Ireland and whether they can build momentum from a morale-boosting victory.

It was edging past Ireland 21-16 and then Scotland 25-24, each of those down to 14 men, which set up last year's title charge and much better subsequent Wales performances against England, Italy and France.

Wales have almost the exact same sequence of matches again, albeit at different venues.

After Ireland, they meet Scotland at home, England at Twickenham and wind up with Principality Stadium clashes against France and Italy in mid-March.

It is the fact Wales have to go to Dublin and Twickenham which counts against them when it comes to the Triple Crown odds, where they are as low as 25-1, with England 7-4 and Ireland 5-2.

Owen Farrell and his team have home advantage against Wales and Ireland, kicking off their tournament with a trip to Murrayfield to take on the Scots.

France are viewed as champions in the making, and indeed the team most likely to land a Grand Slam.

They open up with Paris clashes against Italy and Ireland, followed by mid-tournament trips to Murrayfield and Cardiff, before winding up with Le Crunch against England at Stade de France.

The French are 7-2 for the Grand Slam, with England 11-2, Ireland 8-1 and Wales as low as 40-1 in some places.

As for Wales' opener in Dublin, Pivac's men are being handed a 12-point start on the handicap, which will certainly appeal to the always optimistic members of the Welsh fan base.
