Veteran Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday is a defensive specialist who has the steadiness of a floor general like Derrick White mixed with a bit of the chaos magic of Marcus Smart, splitting the difference between the two Boston backcourt archetypes of recent seasons.
The Celtics, recognizing his unique skill set and ability to guard up to players even the size of a Joel Embiid for short stretches, have built a new defensive identity into their style of play to capitalize on those gifts. Whether using him to slow down an opposing club’s best scorers or like Boston used to deploy big man Robert Williams III as a disruptive roamer, Holiday is not one for opponents facing him as a defender.
NBC Sports Boston’s “Zolak and Bertrand” show recently sat down with Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla to learn more about Holiday’s defensive contributions.
