How Steven Bergwijn and Tottenham's summer departures fared in the first game of the season

Five players left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer, though Spurs’ 4-1 win over Southampton on the opening weekend of the Premier League season suggests they aren’t going to be missed.

Nevertheless, football.london has looked back on how the departures fared for their respective new clubs at the weekend.

Was it a case of the grass being greener?

Steven Bergwijn (Ajax)

Steven Bergwijn joined Ajax on a £26.4million deal and lined up on the left-hand side of a front three for their Eredivisie opener at Fortuna Sittard.

There was an inauspicious opening for the 24-year-old who coughed up possession in midfield and saw the hosts break to open the scoring through Paul Gladon.

Fortuna held the lead until the interval but two half-time substitutions made all the difference for the visitors.

Brian Brobbey and Davy Klaassen were the men introduced and Brobbey went on to score as Ajax hit back to lead 3-1.

Bergwijn looked to have made it 4-1 but had his strike chalked off by VAR for offside.

Fortuna Sittard pulled a goal back courtesy of Burak Yilmaz late on and as Ajax ran down the clock, Bergwijn was replaced by Mohammed Kudus in the first minute of injury time.

Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic)

Carter-Vickers’ loan deal with the Scottish champions was made permanent in the summer and he again produced a consistent display for the Bhoys in their 3-1 Scottish Premier League win at Ross County.

Looked solid when County took the initiative, while a mazy run into the box almost led to a goal, one of a couple of forward drives from the American.

Jack Clarke (Sunderland)

Clarke signed a four-year deal with the Championship side in July and lined up against Bristol City on the left-hand side in a wing-back role.

The youngster had a quiet first half, although he did clear a Chris Martin shot off the line to prevent hosts City going 3-1 up just past the half-hour mark.

He was much more prominent down the flank in the second half, helping Sunderland fight back to win 3-1 before being replaced in the 88th minute.

Joe Rodon (Rennes)

Rodon made his Ligue 1 debut at the back for Rennes in their Brittany derby at home to Lorient after joining on a season-long loan deal.

However, despite Rennes dominating much of the game, the hosts went down to a 1-0 defeat. Another debutant, Arthur Theate, settled the fixture with an unfortunate own goal.

Pierluigi Gollini (Atalanta)

Gollini did not make an appearance for Spurs after joining on a season-long loan deal and again found himself out in the cold at the weekend. New club Atalanta were beaten 2-1 by Valencia in the Trofeu Taronja season curtain-raiser, with Juan Musso taking the goalkeeping duties for the Serie A side and Marco Sportiello the preferred back-up option on the bench.
