Mohamed Salah was destined to leave Liverpool, until the moment that he wasn’t. After countless discussions regarding the Egyptian’s supposed future plans and how his career path would lead away from Anfield, fresh terms have been agreed on Merseyside.
Salah is going nowhere, with a new contract signed through to the summer of 2027. Fans that feared another emotional goodbye not all that long ago, as a wistful eye was cast over past achievements, are now eagerly anticipating what is to come.
With another title in the bag, after dominating Premier League betting markets throughout 2024-25 as no domestic rival got a look in, Arne Slot is daring to dream big. Liverpool’s procession towards a 20th top-flight crown has seen them dip as low as 1/500 in Premier League winner odds, with it quickly becoming a case of when, not if, they would enjoy coronation day. Salah, unsurprisingly, played a leading role in moving the Reds towards and ultimately over that line.
Records have tumbled

Remarkable individual standards have been maintained by a man that returned to England - following a previously forgettable stint at Chelsea - in the summer of 2017. He will, if everything goes to plan, complete a decade of loyal service at Anfield.
Records have tumbled around Salah from the moment that he netted on debut in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Watford. The ‘Egyptian King’ is now closing in on 250 efforts in total for the Reds - with over 180 of those recorded in the Premier League. While that return is healthy, he remains some way short of Alan Shearer’s all-time mark of 260. Salah will, however, be sticking around for at least a couple more years.
With his stunning strike rate taken into account, it would be foolish to write any achievement off. Shearer has said of potentially being chased down at the top of a notable chart: "He's an incredible talent, he'll definitely have a chance the way he's been, the way he is and the way Liverpool are going. He’ll have a good go like a few others have."
The all-time conversation

Salah certainly has to come into the all-time conversation, but is topping Shearer realistic even for a player of his ilk? It is difficult to see how he could, despite being one of the most fearsome forwards on the planet, score 70-plus goals across just two seasons. He would likely get close, but another year may be required in order to rein in Shearer and ultimately pass him.
The most prolific return in a single Premier League season currently stands at 36. If Salah can match that, before repeating the trick in back-to-back campaigns, then another entry in the history books will fall within reach. He may, however, require Liverpool to put more paperwork on the table in order to hit another long-term goal. Those fans dreading the day that Salah does eventually depart - while never walking alone - will happily see him hang around for as long as possible.
Shearer may not be sitting uncomfortably just yet - with Harry Kane another threat to his record that is not even in English football at present - but he should expect to be left squirming at some stage.
