In 1974, Rangers were invited, along with Athletic Bilbao and Ajax to play in Barcelona's famous Joan Gamper Trophy, where three clubs from around the world play in a pre-season tournament.
The tournament was to celebrate Barcelona's 75th anniversary. Rangers had two years previously lifted the European Cup-Winners Cup at the Nou Camp and were drawn to face Athletic in the semi-final.
An astonishing crowd of 100,000 turned up to see Rangers win 1-0 thanks to a goal from Sandy Jardine three minutes before half time.
And even though it was a friendly, Athletic were reduced to ten men late on when Jose Maria Nunez was sent off for aiming a kick at Graham Fyfe.
Rangers manager Jock Wallace said: "It was a great result and I am delighted because we get to meet Barcelona in the final.
"And the atmosphere at the Nou Camp will be like a European Cup Final." Rangers faced the hosts in the final, who had Dutch legends Johan Cruyff and Johan Neeskens in their line-up.
But they went down to a 4-1 defeat despite a fine goal netted by Fyfe. RANGERS XI: Kennedy, Denny, Miller, Johnstone, Jackson, Jardine, Forsyth, McLean, Young, Fyfe, Scott.
