How Rangers & Celtic's European results boosted the coefficient

It's been a positive week for Scotland on the European front.

Last night, Rangers secured automatic passage into the last-16 of the Europa League with their 2-1 victory over Union Saint-Gilliose at Ibrox resulting in a top-eight finish for Philippe Clement's side.

And on Wednesday, despite tasting defeat at Villa Park, Brendan Rodgers' Celtic already knew they'd be guaranteed a Champions League play-off.

The Hoops will take on either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in that tie, with the draw made later today.

Meanwhile, in the last-16 of the Europa League, Rangers will face any one of FC Twente, Fenerbahce, Bodo/Glimt or Anderlecht.

The key word here is progression - and this is ultimately good for Scotland's coefficient ranking.

So, how much has each Scottish team added to that system this season?

Well, as per Scotland's Coefficient on social media site X, Celtic have added 3.2, Rangers have added 3.15, Hearts added 1, while Kilmarnock and St Mirren added 0.5 and 0.4 points respectively.

Celtic's most recent exploits by making it through the league phase of UEFA's top club competition added 1.2 bonus points, meanwhile, their 21st-placed finish in the standings added a further 0.2 points.

Rangers earned Scotland 0.85 bonus points for their eighth-place finish in the Europa League standings, while they also added another 0.2 points for automatically reaching the round of 16.

Currently, Scotland are 14th in UEFA's coefficient ranking on 33.500 points.

Austria are just ahead in 13th on 34.700, with Norway on 35.250 and Greece on 36.000.

Turkieye, who occupy 10th spot, are considerably further ahead with a score of 41.900.

If both Rangers and Celtic can continue their European journeys, then this will only benefit the long-term projections for Scottish clubs on the continent.
