How people struggling in Leeds can get help keeping their homes warm for free

It has been announced there is extra support available for struggling people in Leeds to help keep their homes warm as bills are set to increase in April.

Leeds City Council have extended a scheme that allows eligible city residents on low incomes to apply for insulation that keeps heat in to be installed in their attics for free.

According to the council, around a quarter of the heat in a house is lost through an uninsulated roof.

This comes as many on low incomes are worried about the price of heating their homes going up in April when the price cap rises.

Residents can apply for the upgrade until March 31, and the actual work will continue until the end of June.

Already, nearly 285 homes in Leeds have had the insulation installed, and some even got free solar panels.

The scheme is being delivered alongside Better Homes Yorkshire.

Who can get it?

Those with the coldest homes (an E, F or G Energy Performance Certificate) will be prioritised, though those rated D are encouraged to apply still in case funding becomes available.

Homeowners must have a combined income of £30,000 or lower to qualify or be receiving certain benefits. Savings and property value aren't considered.

Landlords can also apply for a subsidised version of the installation if their tenants earn under £30,000.

How to apply

Denis Cryer, a resident who has installed free solar panels thanks to the scheme said: “The installation of the panels was great. Work was completed on time and the staff were very polite. It has not cost us a penny and I cannot fault the process. It is a concern to see bills rising but fortunately this scheme has given me an opportunity to do something about it!”

Councillor Helen Hayden, executive member for infrastructure and climate, said: “With Leeds households facing rising energy costs, it has never been more important to help residents save energy and stay warm for less. I hope these changes to this fantastic scheme will mean that more families are able to benefit.

“I strongly encourage residents to call Better Homes Yorkshire if they think they might qualify. You have nothing to lose by doing so and I want to see as many residents benefit from this offer as possible.

“As well as helping households save money and stay warm, these upgrades will help cut carbon and make homes fit for a more sustainable future—yet another reminder of the immediate benefits that result from our efforts to tackle climate change.”
