How old was Prince Harry when Princess Diana died?

Netflix’s behind-the-scenes documentary exploring the lives of Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, dropped on the platform on Thursday. The six-part docuseries, Harry & Meghan, gives the royal couple the chance to tell their story, in their own words.

In it, they candidly discuss the entire span of their relationship, and cover controversies that culminated in their decision to step down as senior members of the Royal Family in 2020. Harry, now aged 38, compares the intense scrutiny suffered by his wife Meghan, to that of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, who died when he was young.

On relocating his family to the US, Harry revealed his “biggest concern” was removing his family from the “constant barrage” of media attention. He said: “What I was seeing was history repeating itself. But more, perhaps.

“Or definitely far more dangerous because then you add race in and you add social media in. And when I’m talking about history repeating itself, I’m talking about my mother.”

Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, was tragically killed in a car crash in 1997. Shortly after midnight on August 31, Diana left the Ritz Hotel in Paris with her romantic partner Dodi Al Fayed.

The car they were being driven in crashed into a pillar in the Alma tunnel. Al Fayed was killed instantly, while Diana suffered severe injuries.

Around an hour later, Diana was taken to hospital in an ambulance – she had already suffered cardiac arrest. At 4am, Princess Diana was declared dead, aged 36.

The car’s driver Henri Paul also died at the scene, with an inquest later finding him to be under the influence of alcohol and prescription drugs. Bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones was the sole survivor of the crash.

Diana’s funeral took place a week later on September 6, when Harry was 12-years-old, and just over a week before his 13th birthday. Harry walked behind the funeral cortège from Kensington Palace to Westminster Abbey alongside his father, his brother, Price William, grandfather Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and his uncle and Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer.
