How much will minimum wages go up by in 2025? Increases to take effect in April

The National Minimum and National Living Wage are going up in April, boosting the income of millions of workers across the UK.

From April 1, those on National Living Wage (NLW) can expect a pay increase worth £1,400 a year, based on a 35-hour working week. That breaks down to £26 a week, or £117 a month.

For those on National Minimum Wage (NMW), pay could be boosted by as much as £2,500 a year for those working full-time.

The increase applies to all workers on National Living or Minimum Wage, whether they are full-time, part-time or in temporary roles.

The amount they earn depends on a number of factors, including their age and whether or not they are an an apprentice.

“This change is another step towards creating a genuine living wage that supports millions of families across the country,” said the Government.

How much is the minimum wage going up by?

The NLW is going up by 6.7% for those aged 21 and above to £12.21 per hour. That’s a 77p increase per hour.

For those aged between 18 and 20, the minimum wage will increase by 16.3% – or £1.40 per hour – taking it to £10 per hour.

For 16-17 year olds and apprentices, the rate will increase to £7.55, an 18% increase.

Do workers need to do anything?

For employees on minimum wage, there’s nothing they need to do to ensure they receive their pay increase.

However, it’s worth checking payslips after April 1 to ensure that the employer is putting the mandatory increase into action if you are eligible for it.

For employers, the Government will ensure that all employers are aware of the new rates and take the steps needed to prepare for payroll changes from April 1.
