How much Roman Abramovich originally paid for Chelsea in 2003 as £2.5bn bid ‘rejected’

Roman Abramovich has been the majority shareholder of Chelsea for nearly 20 years having completed his takeover of the west London club in 2003.

The Russian oligarch might be set to end his association with the Blues sooner rather than later though, with it being claimed that he has offered to sell the club to Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss.

Speaking in an interview with Blick, he said: "[Abramovich] wants to get rid of Chelsea quickly. I and three other people received an offer on Tuesday to buy Chelsea from Abramovich.

"I have to wait four to five days now. Abramovich is currently asking far too much. You know, Chelsea owe him £2billion [it is £1.5billion]. But Chelsea has no money. That means: those who buy Chelsea should compensate Abramovich.

"As of today, we don't know the exact selling price. I can well imagine starting at Chelsea with partners. But I have to examine the general conditions first. But what I can already say: I'm definitely not doing something like this alone. If I buy Chelsea, then with a consortium consisting of six to seven investors."

Despite Abramovich’s intention to cash-in, it appears that he has already turned down an opening offer. As per Sky News, he has rejected an offer of £2.5bn, with a price of £3bn being slapped on the Stamford Bridge outfit.

Should any interested party pay the asking price, Abramovich is in line to earn a significant profit from any sale.

According to the BBC, the Russian paid just £140million to acquire the club from Ken Bates back in 2003.

It means that Abramovich could be in line to receive over 20 times his original investment should he complete a deal having established the Blues on the European stage in his time in west London.
