FIRST Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced she is resigning as leader of the SNP – but how much money will she make after she stands down?
Sturgeon's current salary rate was revealed earlier this month when she published her tax returns in a challenge to Rishi Sunak.
The financial documents covered the past six years Sturgeon had served as First Minister and showed she had only received income from her position as leader of the Scottish Government and an MSP.
In 2021/22 and 2020/21, Sturgeon was paid £140,496 and subsequently paid back £51,237 in tax. The SNP said Sturgeon had returned around £27,000 worth of her salary back into the system to pay for services.
Now, with Sturgeon insisting she wasn't leaving politics and would serve out the rest of the parliamentary term on the back benches, she will only receive a standard MSP salary, set to rise to £67,661 in April this year.
However, Sturgeon isn't going to be short of cash – as her pension fund has a whopping £457,077.07 put away for her retirement.
But she will also receive a resettlement grant for leaving the role of First Minister, worth 50% of the final officeholder salary.
At the current rate Surgeon receives, this would equate to £96,567, according to the Scottish Parliament.
However, the figures could change if her official resignation date is after April 1.
The popular politician could also potentially make a decent additional wage from speeches and appearances.
It was revealed earlier this month that former prime minister Boris Johnson was paid £2.5 million in advance for speeches and appearances on the global speaking circuit.
