Former Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi is closing in on a return to the Premier League just a year after leaving the Reds.
The striker joined Union Berlin in a £6.5m transfer last summer before enjoying a prolific campaign for the Bundesliga outfit as he scored 20 goals and was called up to the Nigeria squad in the process. And such form attracted the interest of newly-promoted Nottingham Forest ahead of their return to the English top-flight.
Liverpool included a 10% sell-on clause when selling the Nigerian, who never kicked a ball for the club due to work permit issues, last year and are now set to receive a windfall as a result with the 24-year-old on the verge of a move to Forest. Awoniyi is currently undergoing a medical ahead of joining the Tricky Trees in a club-record £17.5m transfer.

With Union Berlin making a hefty profit on the striker after just one season, it had been reported that the Reds would receive £1.75m due to their 10% sell-on clause. However, club insiders have revealed Liverpool will actually receive roughly £1.5m from the German side instead, offering an insight into the finer details of Awoniyi’s move from Anfield and return to the Premier League.
Should Awoniyi pass his medical, he will complete his transfer to Forest and be poised to make a belated Premier League debut, seven years on from his £400k move to Liverpool, away at Newcastle United on Saturday 6 August. Meanwhile, he could face his former employers for the first time on Saturday 22 October at the City Ground, with Forest then scheduled to make the return trip to Anfield on Saturday 22 April.
