How much it really costs to live like Emily in Paris

Hit Netflix show Emily in Paris returned to our screens this month after a year-long wait - but have you ever wondered how much it would cost to live like Emily Cooper?

The romantic comedy series is set and filmed in Paris, starring Lily Collins as aspiring marketing executive Emily Cooper, an American who moves to France to provide an American point of view to Savoir, a French marketing firm. The show follows Emily as she struggles to succeed in the workplace while searching for love and experiencing a culture clash.

Emily in Paris also stars Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu as Sylvie, Ashley Park as Mindy, Lucas Bravo as Gabriel, Samuel Arnold as Julien, Bruno Gouery a Luc, Camille Razat as Camille, William Abadie as Antoine, and Lucien Laviscount as Alfie.

In the series, we see Emily Cooper living a seemingly glamorous lifestyle – from flaunting her expensive clothing, regularly dining out, and attending extravagant events for her work as a marketing executive. However, this all surely racks up to a huge bill.

Experts at New Casinos have analysed Emily’s lifestyle to determine her annual spending compared to her salary, which is estimated to be €45,251 (£39,063.65), and converted the costs from euros to British pounds.

The American expat is apparently a big spender when it comes to her clothes, with this being her most expensive habit. Based on the prices of some of the clothing that we see her roaming the streets of Paris in, Emily is estimated to spend a total of an £63,853.73 annually on clothes and accessories.

Valentino, Prada, Christian Louboutin, and Balmain are just a selection of the luxury brands she is be spotted in; although one of her more expensive choices is the Vassilis Zoulias yellow printed jacket that she is seen wearing in the fourth episode of season two, which comes with a price tag of £44,889.83.

Emily pays around £27,545.09 a year for rent, which leaves her £11,518.56 left for the whole year to cover other expenses. It’s no surprise that she has to splurge on her apartment though, given that it is in Place de l’Estrapade in the 5th arrondissement, right near the Pantheon – one of Paris’s major attractions.

Utilities are another essential - yet pricey - expense and Emily’s bill totals to £1,972.60 a year. Emily spends much of her time dining out in restaurants around the city too, with a total spend of around £2,693.39 a year, with the assumption that she does so twice a week, making it her third most expensive habit.

In the show, the marketing executive once revealed to her friend Camille how she got lost using the Metro, which is the cheapest, easiest, and quickest way to travel around Paris. In an attempt to avoid getting lost again, we see Emily use taxis to get around instead - costing her £2,450.98 a year on transport.

Emily is also often seen grabbing a cup of coffee, most likely to keep her going through her hectic schedule. Based on the average price of a regular cappuccino in the city, Emily racks up an annual bill of £189.57 on her morning coffee, assuming that she indulges once daily for five days a week.

In total, Emily spends £99,782.72 a year to maintain her lavish lifestyle, which is £60,719.07 over her annual income.

A spokesperson from New Casinos commented on the findings and said: “When it comes to our favourite fiction TV shows, we sometimes have to remind ourselves that it isn’t a reality. Emily in Paris is a show in which extravagance is at the core but it’s interesting to see just how unrealistic the luxurious living of Emily is.

“The findings are a friendly reminder that her lifestyle isn’t exactly one to admire, given that her salary doesn’t cover half of her spending.”
