How much energy each household appliance REALLY costs you to run - as bills to soar again

Energy bills are set to rise again next year - but a staggering number of Brits still don’t know how much power the appliances in their home are using.

Almost three quarters (72%) of people have no idea which appliances are the biggest energy guzzlers, according to new research from EDF.

The poll of 2,000 UK adults revealed only a quarter (28%) are aware their oven is the biggest contributor to electricity bills.

Using this appliance for two hours, 12 minutes a day costs the average household £47.12 a month, or £565.44 a year.

And families using an electric hob or grill for a similar amount of time can expect to pay £32.13 a month, or £385.56 a year.

Households with an electric shower used for 12 minutes a day are forking out £18.36 a month, or £220.32 a year.

The new analysis from EDF also highlights the most common energy mistakes that could be adding hundreds of pounds to your bill.

Only one in five (22%) households wash their clothes on a 30-degree cycle - despite this using around 40% less electricity over a year.

Other mistakes include a third (36%) of people still using the tumble dryer instead of saving £50.83 by airing your clothes to dry.

And only a third (31%) put on dishwasher loads when the machine is full, despite the appliance costing on average £112 a year.

Catherine Fowler, Energy Expert at EDF said: “Managing household energy usage is more important than ever at the moment, but it can be hard to make savings without first understanding where your biggest spend is.

“For instance, spending 10 minutes less using the oven will save considerably more than the same reduction in use of the microwave, so knowing which appliances use the most energy can help all of us make small changes to be more efficient.

“Even the way we go about our household chores can have a large impact on bills in the long run, so thinking of ways to cut back or swap for more energy efficient routines can be a great first step.

“For example, switching from using the tumble dryer to an airer or only using the dishwasher when it is full can go a long way to reducing bills.”
