Home of The Masters golf tournament, Augusta National Golf Club is one of the most esteemed and exclusive courses on the planet, with membership available strictly by invitation.
History Of Augusta National Golf Club
Established during the Great Depression by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts in Augusta, Georgia, the Augusta National Golf Club first opened its doors in 1933 and is considered to be one of the most iconic golf courses on earth.
The yearly Masters tournament, one of four major championships in professional golf and arguably the most esteemed of the four, has been held at the course since 1934, in which the modern-day players earn a share of the $20 million prize pot, with over $3.6m going to the winner alone.
Renowned worldwide for its impeccable appearance, acquiring a membership to play on the course doesn’t come easy. There is no application process, with membership packages being offered strictly by invitation.
The club’s season spans from October to May, and it is said that there are about 300 members at Augusta National at any given time. Each member is issued their very own green jacket at a small fee, which cannot be removed from the grounds, and they are also permitted to bring several guests at a time.
How Much Does An Augusta National Membership Cost?
Due to Augusta National being owned by a private company that doesn’t publish their accounts, it’s hard to determine an estimate on how much the club earns in membership fees, as well as how much it receives for hosting The Masters.
One of the main rules for members being that they must refrain from talking publicly about the club is also a major stumbling block in estimating an exact figure. Even the chairman, Fred Riley (since 2017), rarely mentions the club in public settings.
Despite this, it is believed that membership costs between £75,000 and £240,000 per annum. However the official figure remains undisclosed. In terms of annual dues, in 2020 it was estimated that members pay less than £25,000 per year to maintain their membership status.
Those who are lucky enough to be able to call themselves Augusta National Golf Club members are able to enjoy access to the prestigious 18-hole golf course, as well as the club’s various facilities, including a swimming pool, a clubhouse, tennis courts, and more.
