How Morrisons Savers tights are saving one shopper money on her food bill

With the cost of food bills on the rise, shoppers are doing all they can to make savings. And for some that means going to unusual lengths.

One woman shared a post in a budget shopping group to explain how she's using ladies tights to keep food fresher for longer.

Sharing a photo of onions hanging up in tights and separated by knots, she said: "Not sure if this will help anyone, but this works. I just buy a box of Morrison Savers tights every so often, but you can use any cheap brand, Morrisons is just my closest store.

"Also not sure about the 8 months as mine are usually used up within 3 months, but it certainly makes them keep fresh longer. Heard it works for garlic as well but have not tried that."

Asked whether she cuts the tights - costing £2.48 for a six-pack - and whether it works out more than any saving would amount to, she replied: "I use cheap tights, but yes yes you need to cut them to get to the onions. I suppose you could try untying the knots if you wanted to reuse the same tights."

As for where she stores the onions, she said: " I have an old coat hook in my kitchen that doesn't get used for anything else, so I hang them there." As bizarre as it may seem, she isn't the only one using the method to stop food going off.

"We do this with cooking apples," said one. "I do this but use twist ties or tie a shoe lace in place of the knot so the stocking can be reused," said another.

And while it's new to some people, others said such a storage method was more commonplace in years gone by.

"My Granny used to do this with her old nylon stockings and hang them up in the shed," one woman commented. While another added: "I remember my Nan doing this when I was a kid."
