How McDonald's burger-flipper became millionaire boss who employs 1,000 people

A former burger-flipper clambered up the greasy poll to own the McDonald's he once worked in.

David Wynne opened his own company White Rose UK Ltd which now owns all McDonald’s restaurants in Cornwall and Devon.

The 59-year-old businessman started out as a Maccy Ds burger flipper, Cornwall Live reported.

By the age of 21 David was the youngest McDonald's UK restaurant manager in the country.

From then he was promoted to area manager for the South West and Wales, and then the West Midlands.

After 19 years, he asked to become a franchisee before leading his Birmingham business to become top performer among 185 franchises.

David bought up five outlets in 2008 - Plymstock, Plympton, Derriford and two in the city centre - employing 400 people.

In the years since he has built up his restaurant portfolio and now employs close to 1,000 people.

His company turned over £31million in 2017.

In his time as a franchisee he has had some amazing experiences.

Seven of the staff from McDonald's in Plymouth were selected to work at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The employees were chosen from more than 87,000 members of staff across the country, following a series of tests.

David Wynne said at the time: “McDonald’s was looking for its very best people.

"I’m delighted that staff from across Plymouth have been chosen to take part in this fantastic opportunity.”

During his time in charge of the restaurants David has spearheaded a renovation of restaurants and changed menus to be healthier.

He told Cornwall Live in 2008: “I’m very excited to be taking ownership of the Plymouth restaurants, particularly given my connections with the city.

“It’s a great place to live and work and I’m looking forward to meeting people here to ensure we provide the best possible experience for our customers.

“Not many people realise that a high proportion of McDonald’s restaurants are franchised and represent local businesses in their own right.

“I’m responsible for everything from customer service and food hygiene to staff development. I relish the variety this provides, as well as the opportunity for investment in the community.”
