Tyson Fury has announced his shock retirement from boxing – though some fans are dubious over whether he will stick to his word.
The Gypsy King revealed the shock news of his retirement in an Instagram post on Monday afternoon.
‘Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet,’ Fury said in the clip.
‘I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it.
‘I’m going to end with this. Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side. GET UP!’
The announcement appeared to put an end to any hopes of a Battle of Britain bout with Anthony Joshua.
However, it isn’t the first time that Fury has called time on his boxing career.

When Tyson Fury First Announced His Retirement
In November 2013, Tyson Fury announced his retirement from boxing on X (then Twitter).
This came after his proposed bout with David Haye fell through for the second time. They were initially due to meet in September 2013, only for Haye to pull out six days before the fight after suffering a cut above his left eye that required six stitches.
The bout was postponed until February 2014, but in November 2013 the fight was cancelled after Haye was advised to retire after major shoulder injury.
Fury, in retaliation on Twitter, wrote: “Hi every1, I have officially retired from boxing. There’s too many bent people in the sport.
“They will have to f*** someone else. Goodbye boxing.” However, just a week after he was due to fight Haye in February, he would instead face American heavyweight Joey Abell – stopping him in the fourth round.
Fury’s Return After Two-And-A-Half Years Out
Tyson Fury enjoyed the biggest victory of his career at that point against Vladimir Klitschko in November 2015 – however he announced his retirement the following year and did not fight again until June 2018.
Following his victory over Klitschko where he became world heavyweight champion, his mental health began to decline and the Gypsy King put on a lot of weight.
He was also involved in a lengthy battle with UK Anti-Doping after the prohibited substance nandrolone was found in samples given by Fury and his cousin Hughie in February 2015. The Furys denied this charge and argued the substance had come from eating uncastrated wild boar.
During his time away from the ring, Fury twice suggested he was retiring. First in October 2016, he wrote: “Boxing is the saddest thing I ever took part in, all a pile of s***, I’m the greatest and I’m also retired.”
A few hours later, he countered the statement, posting: “Hahahaha u think you will get rid of the GYPSYKING that easy!!! I’m here to stay. #TheGreatest just shows u what the media are like. Tut tut.”
Then in August 2017 he posted again on Instagram, saying: “Been very blessed in my life & career achieve the upmost in boxing, was a epic journey along the way. Thanks to all the fans that supported & believed in me along the way. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. THE END.”
However, ten months later he came out of ‘retirement’ for a second time. He lost ten stone getting back into shape and started a legendary career resurgence.
Fury’s Retirement After Beating Dillian Whyte
After his second comeback from retirement, Tyson Fury’s career hit new heights with a memorable trilogy against Deontay Wilder and winning the WBC heavyweight title.
The Gypsy King though would again announce his retirement after beating Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium in April 2023.
During his post-fight interview, saying: “I’ve been in this game 20 years, I’m 34 in a few months. I said the third Wilder fight would be my last but I felt I owed the fans one last homecoming. This is definitely the end of the Gypsy King and I went out with a bang…I fulfilled everything I’ve ever wanted to fulfil.
“I will retire as only the second heavyweight in history, after Rocky Marciano, to retire undefeated. I was unbeatable at this game.”
Fury continued to insist he was retired in follow-up interviews and on social media. However, before the year ended, he was back in the ring to defend his WBC title against Derek Chisora to complete their trilogy.
Will Fury Come Out Of Retirement Again?
With his undefeated streak out of the window and at 36-years-old, this would seem the most logical out of Tyson Fury’s retirements.
Fury has enjoyed a legendary boxing career and there would be arguments that it would be sensible to retire now while he’s at the top of his game, than continue past his prime like other great boxers of the past have done.
However, a Battle of Britain clash with Anthony Joshua is one that all British boxing fans want to see – regardless of both men’s defeats in recent years.
What could persuade Fury out of retirement for perhaps a final time is the money that fight would bring.
Saudi Arabia could look to increase their offer to entice back him into the ring for a fight with Joshua down the line.
