How many NHL teams have come back from a 3-0 deficit in the Stanley Cup Final? Here’s the answer

Reverse sweeping a playoff series is already hard enough to do. But to do so in the Stanley Cup Final is a rare feat indeed.

The 2024 Stanley Cup Final has seen the Edmonton Oilers complete a three-game comeback against the Florida Panthers to force a Game 7. If the Oilers win Game 7, they’d enter their name into the history books in a very, very rare category.

Coming into 2024, there is only one team that has completed a reverse sweep in the Stanley Cup Final. In 1942, the Toronto Maple Leafs reverse swept the Detroit Red Wings to become Stanley Cup champions. A few years later in 1945, the Red Wings would climb back from a 3-0 deficit against — you guessed it — the Maple Leafs to force a Game 7, but they ultimately fell short.

So, if the Oilers complete the reverse sweep, they’ll be just the second team in NHL history to do so in the Stanley Cup Final. How cool!
