How many languages can King Charles III speak?

Following his address in Berlin last Thursday (March 30) King Charles has set tongues a wagging with his talent of languages. It appears that our new monarch has quite the way with words and is proficient in a fair few of them.

On his first state visit since becoming monarch, King Charles visited Germany last week, alongside his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort. At a state banquet, where the couple were joined by both British and German dignitaries, Charles gave a speech in German, in which he said he and Camilla had been "deeply touched" by the warm welcome.

He also praised the "very special" German nation, before he said that both nations would stand united with Ukraine, the BBC reports. His Majesty also spoke mostly in German while visiting the lower house of the German parliament, telling members of the Bundestag it had been a "particular honour" to be in Germany and that he "wanted to renew the pledge of friendship" between the two nations.

The fact the King spoke mostly in German has left many people across the globe in awe of him - and also wondering just how many more languages he can speak. His mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, was said to have been fluent in French, too, and with so many state visits and trips around the globe over the years, it's no surprise that our new King has made efforts to get to grips with the local language.

How many languages does King Charles speak?

In numerous reports, like this one from The Sun, King Charles is said to speak a total of four languages, all varying in proficiency. These are English, Welsh, French and German.

However it is also believed that His Majesty has some knowledge of Scottish Gaelic, with other rumours suggesting he may even know a bit of Greek, too. He likely learnt French at school, in addition to it being the most spoken European language in the Royal Family, and he also studied Welsh history and language for one academic term at the University College of Wales in Aberystwyth, while preparing to become the Prince of Wales.

It is thought that, because of his father's German ancestry, King Charles likely learnt the German language through both school and family. And it's not the first time he has delivered part of a speech in German - back in 2019, His Majesty gave such a speech when he attended an embassy event in Berlin.
