Happy Valley was the jewel of the BBC's New Year crown when it made its long awaited return to screens at the start of this month and, while gutted that its new series will also be its last, viewers were beside themselves with excitement.
It was nearly nine years ago, back in 2014, when the Sally Wainwright drama made its debut on BBC One, becoming an instant ratings hit and proving to be truly unmissable TV, as ex Coronation Street star Sarah Lancashire took on the lead role of Catherine Cawood, as no nonsense police DS with a troubled past.
Happy Valley's first series had some shocking and horrifying moments, including the death of young police officer Kirsten McAskill by the wheels of villain Tommy Lee Royce's car and a violent confrontation between Catherine and Tommy, the man who raped and impregnated her daughter Becky, who committed suicide after giving birth to son Ryan.
There was plenty of gripping drama in Happy Valley series two as well, with a memorable showdown between Catherine and Tommy at is mother's funeral and police detective John Wadsworth being driven to murder after being blackmailed by a woman he had an affair with, before throwing himself of off a bridge as the net closed in.
Sarah is back to lead the Happy Valley cast for the new series, as Amit Shah (The Other One, The Long Call), Mark Stanley (The Girl Before, White House Farm) and Mollie Winnard (All Creatures Great And Small, Four Lives) would join the ranks.
How many episodes of Happy Valley are there?
There are SIX episodes in Happy Valley's third and final series, with them airing on Sunday nights at 9pm on BBC One for the next few weeks, ending on Sunday, February 5.
After things had started to build nicely over the first three episodes of the new series, things took quite a turn in the dying moments of episode four, , when villain Tommy Lee Royce escaped from court and cycled off to freedom.
Tommy being free man has fuelled theories on how Happy Valley will end, with some fans now worried that Tommy will get the ultimate revenge on Catherine by killing her. In the aftermath of Sunday's gripping episode, one viewer tweeted: "Catherine will end up injured/dead cos she goes after Ryan and Tommy and Tommy naturally fights back," with a second reacting: "Sadly I think she's going to die protecting Ryan but will kill Tommy in the process."
Others are convinced it will be Tommy who meets his maker, with another avid viewer posting: I’m calling it: I think Tommy attempts to kill Catherine, but Ryan somehow kills him, whilst saving her" and a fourth commenting: "It'll be Tommy. Ms Wainwright would not let the country suffer the killing of Catherine."
Happy Valley actor Amit Shah has revealed that even the cast don't know how things will unfold, as alternative endings have been filmed.
