Ireland could see record-breaking temperatures today as the ‘mini-heatwave’ the country has been enjoying peaks.
Some weather models show the mercury topping Ireland’s 145-year-old record of 33.3C, sparking Met Eireann to issue a rare ‘high temperature’ weather warning.
The nationwide alert reads: “On Monday exceptionally warm weather will occur over Ireland with daytime temperatures of 25C to 30C generally and possibly up to 32C in places on Monday. Night time temperatures will range from 15C to 20C.”

A further alert for Tuesday, which only affects counties in Leinster, reads: "On Tuesday the very warm weather will continue to occur over Leinster with daytime temperatures of 25C to 28C."
However, there is bad news for sun worshippers as Met Eireann has confirmed the hot weather will be short-lived.
While temperatures are due to remain warm on Tuesday, thunderstorms are forecast to develop throughout the day.
Met Eireann says that by Wednesday “temperatures will return to normal” with the weather “turning wetter over the weekend”.
Its forecast for Monday reads: “Any mist and fog will clear most areas this morning leaving a hot, dry and mostly sunny day. Temperatures will generally range from 27C to 32C, it will be cooler near coasts especially where sea fog persisting along some Atlantic coasts in mostly moderate southerly breezes.
“Tonight will be warm with temperatures staying above 14C to 18C, or locally warmer, especially in the east. It will be mainly dry with a mix of cloud and some clear spells, but a few showers could develop in the west by morning. Some mist and fog will develop in mostly light variable winds, however winds will increase moderate to occasionally fresh northwesterly over the western half of the country by morning.”
Looking ahead to Tuesday, it continued: “Tuesday will continue very warm over the eastern half of the country with highest temperatures of 22C to 26C. It will be cooler further west with highs of 16C to 22C.
“In the east there will be hazy sunny spells and the chance of a few isolated heavy showers or thunderstorms developing through the day. To the west it will be cloudier with some showery outbreaks of rain mostly along Atlantic coasts, and the chance of a few heavy bursts. Winds will increase moderate to fresh veering northwesterly through the day.”
Looking further ahead, the national forecaster said: “Temperatures will return to normal from Wednesday onwards with a fair amount of dry weather and a few showers for the rest of the work week. Turning wetter then over the weekend.”
The hot weather has yet to be officially declared a heatwave. Heatwaves are often defined as five days of consecutive above average temperatures, but the Met Eireann definition of a heatwave is five consecutive days of temperatures above 25C.
