How long police can hold Olivia Pratt-Korbel murder suspect for after arrest

Earlier today it was reported that a man had been arrested on suspicion of murdering Olivia Pratt-Korbel.

Merseyside police have a 36-year-old man, from Huyton, in custody. He has also been arrested on two counts of attempted murder.

With the case currently in the public eye, Ruth Langsford and Rylan Clark delivered the latest update while presenting ITV's This Morning. With them was former Scotland Yard detective Peter Bleksley who explained what the detained man can expect.

Ruth asked him what happens now and he replied: "Well on each and every occasion that somebody is arrested, the police have 24 hours to hold that person. So, during that time of course there may be interviews, evidence gathering, speaking to witnesses, forensic evidence being gathered.

"All those kinds of things which happen in the overwhelming majority of investigations. If the senior investigating officer thinks that he needs longer than 24 hours then he can apply for an authority from an officer with a greater rank than him, and they can be granted 36 hours for example to question somebody.

"If, in certain circumstances for example, the police need even more time to carry out their enquiries then they can apply for an even higher level authority to hold somebody a bit longer."

Ruth asked: "So a maximum time eventually?" Peter said: "Yeah, generally speaking 72 hours. It can be extended in terrorism cases for example but that's not what we are dealing with here."

Speaking about how the Liverpool community have come together to try and stop 'grass culture', the former detective said: "I've met so many wonderful, warm, welcoming, well intentioned people." He added: "There is so much to embrace and love about that wonderful city and its people and that's why a large part of my heart lives on Merseyside."
