How Leeds United's draw at Manchester United altered the relegation picture for West Ham

West Ham United have fallen to 17th place in the Premier League following Wednesday’s 2-2 draw between Manchester United and Leeds United.

Despite the Red Devils’ flourishing home form in recent weeks, Erik ten Hag’s side were forced to come from behind to earn a point against the Whites, having gone 2-0 down after Wilfried Gnonto scored inside the opening minute before centre-back Raphael Varane turned into his own net shortly after half time.

Ten Hag’s side did claw back a draw with Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho both netting in the second half, but their goals were unable to prevent the Red Devils from dropping points at home for the time since mid-October.

Leeds started Wednesday night 17th in the table and a point behind West Ham, having played a game fewer. But a point for Leeds, who are without a manager after Jesse Marsch was sacked on Monday, saw them move to 16th and above David Moyes' side.

After 21 games, both Leeds and the Hammers have 19 points and a goal difference of minus eight. However, Leeds have scored ten more goals than West Ham this season, going above them on goal difference.

It leaves West Ham 17th and only one point clear of Everton in 18th place, who returned to winning ways last Saturday with a 1-0 victory over league leaders Arsenal. Next up for the Hammers is a London derby at home on Saturday lunchtime against Chelsea, who are currently ninth after a below-par season.

Premier League's current bottom seven (all after 21 games):

14. Leicester City 21 points
15. Wolverhampton Wanderers 20 points
16. Leeds United 19 points
17. West Ham United 19 points
18. Everton 18 points
19. Bournemouth 17 points
20. Southampton 15 points
