How Leeds United, Leicester City and Southampton results affected West Ham's survival hopes

West Ham United have dropped into the Premier League’s relegation zone following the results of Saturday’s 3pm Premier League fixtures.

The Hammers are not in Premier League action this weekend, with their trip to Manchester City, scheduled for Sunday, postponed due to the Sky Blues’ involvement in the FA Cup.

While the Hammers were not in action, five of the bottom nine, all at danger of relegation, did play during Saturday’s four 3pm kick-offs and as a result, Hammers have fallen down to 18th in the table.

In the game that saw two of the bottom nine take on each other, Leeds United took a three-goal lead at Molineux, with goals from Jack Harrison, Luke Ayling and Rasmus Kristensen giving the Whites a 3-0 advantage with less than 30 minutes to go. Although Wolves pulled two goals back through Jonny Otto and Matheus Cunha, they later went down to ten men when Jonny was shown a straight card, with Leeds winning the game 4-2 after Rodrigo added a late fourth. Wolves ended the game with nine men after Matheus Nunes was sent off deep into second half stoppage time.

There were also six goals in the game between Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, despite trailing 3-1 after goals from Pedro Porro, Harry Kane and Ivan Perisic, Saints earned a late 3-3 draw. Following Che Adams’ goal to make it 1-1 early in the second half, further goals from Theo Walcott and a James Ward-Prowse stoppage time penalty earned Ruben Selles’ side a valuable late point.

Elsewhere, Bournemouth missed the chance to climb out of the Premier League’s relegation zone with a 3-0 defeat away at Aston Villa, with Douglas Luiz, Jacob Ramsey and Emiliano Buendia getting the goals either side of half-time.

The other game in the division saw Leicester City move one point clear of the relegation zone and West Ham, coming from behind to draw 1-1 at Brentford as Harvey Barnes cancelled out Mathias Jensen’s opener. Brentford ended the game with ten men after Shandon Baptiste was sent off.

Those results saw West Ham fall into 18th place and are now a point off 17th place Everton, who head to Chelsea in Saturday’s 5:30pm kick-off.

A boost for the Hammers was seeing Nottingham Forest, now in 15th, lose 2-1 to Newcastle United on Friday night.

West Ham will have at least one game in hand on every other side in the bottom nine when they return to league action on April 2 against Saints at the London Stadium, knowing they cannot slip to bottom before they next play.
