How Leeds City Council is spending your money

As council tax looks set to rise in Leeds, here is what Leeds City Council is spending your money on.

With a total expenditure of £1,293,591,000 in the last financial year, Leeds City Council has spent the most of any council in Yorkshire.

Leeds City Council was the only council in Yorkshire to spend over £1 billion on services, with Sheffield coming in second at £852,326,000, according to official government figures.

The majority of Leeds' spending went on Education Services with £551,585,000, or 43%, going towards this area.

In second place, the council spent 22% of its expenditure on Adult Social Care with a total of £278,596,000. This proportion of investment was similar in neighbouring councils - neighbouring Bradford spent 20% of its expenditure on Adult Social Care.

The council spent less on Children’s Social Care, with a total of £164,408,000, or 13%, this still made it the third largest area of investment.

It also spent a large proportion of its budget of anywhere in Yorkshire on culture, the fourth most invested in category with a total of £77,837,000 or 6% of the total.

This was the highest gross investment of any council in Yorkshire into culture.

In fifth place came the spending on Public Health at 5% with a total of £71,017,000, and while the actual amount invested is higher due to Leeds’ massive budget this is on par for most councils in Yorkshire - except for Barnsley and Doncaster who each spent 10% of their budget on Public Health.

In order from highest to lowest proportion of expenditure the remaining areas are: the Environment at 5%, Highways and Transport at 2%, Planning and Development at 2%, Housing Services at 2% and Central Services at 1%.
