Juventus' pursuit of Chelsea contract rebels Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen could allow the Blues a free run at Matthijs de Ligt who is reportedly considering his future in Italy.
It is common knowledge now that Thomas Tuchel is keen to sign a centre-back or two in the upcoming summer transfer window to make up for a rather quiet January period.
Jules Kounde and Niklas Sule are two names high up on that specific list but others like Marquinhos and de Ligt are also appreciated by the Chelsea board.
And the latter of the quartet could leave Turin this summer with the Old Lady reportedly considering cashing in on the Dutch star with two years left on his current deal.
With a current market value of up to £59million as per the CIES Football Observatory, it's no wonder why the higher ups at the Serie A giants are considering to cash in on vital funds that can help with paying off the Dusan Vlahovic deal.
Therefore, if 22-year-old de Ligt was to depart in the summer from the Italian capital, Max Allegri will have to consider cheaper replacements and Blues duo Christensen and Rudiger are two players admired by Juve.
As per Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport via Football Italia, Juve are monitoring both the Chelsea defenders' situation ahead of the summer where both could potentially be free agents.
A domino effect could be on the cards here: De Ligt to Chelsea if done in the summer could then lead to two Blues departures the other way.
However, if one domino wasn't to fall in this situation, then none of the aforementioned three players in the equation are likely to leave for the stated destinations in these Italian reports.
On de Ligt more specifically, it seems as though the European Champions could face some stern competition for the former Ajax product with CDS saying that 'everyone wants' him.
The report on Sport Witness goes on to add: "While his release clause is set to be at €125m (£104m), Juventus ‘could also agree to negotiate for a lower sum’, which would still see a fee ‘close to the three figures’, meaning €100m (£83m), ‘without forgetting that they will have to pay the last €30m (£25m) to Ajax in the next two years.
"As things stand, de Ligt has not ‘asked for a sale’, delaying anything of that sort ‘to the end of the season’, but a tricky negotiation is on the cards.
"Either they set up a ‘delicate renewal’, although the wage demands will be high, ‘or schedule a sale’, which would suit Chelsea perfectly."
Alternatively, fellow Serie A compatriot Gleison Bremer could be targeted by the Blues board if the Dutchman was to either renew his contract at Juve or move elsewhere.
