How Is Intel's Stock Performance Compared to Other Semiconductor Stocks?

Santa Clara-based Intel Corporation (INTC) is a leading global provider of semiconductor and technology solutions, driving innovation across a broad range of computing and connectivity segments. Valued at $130.95 billion by market cap, Intel operates in multiple sectors, including data centers, Internet of Things (IoT), and personal computing. Its advanced technology and extensive market presence make it a dominant player in the semiconductor industry.

Companies worth $10 billion or more are considered "large-cap" stocks, and Intel fits right into that category, reflecting its substantial size, stability, and influence in the semiconductor industry. Intel, a trusted brand in microprocessors and semiconductor technologies, powers various computing devices. With a large customer base, strong financial performance, and a commitment to innovation, it shapes the future of computing.

Shares of INTC are currently trading 40.8% below their 52-week high of $51.28, which they hit on Dec. 27, 2023. The stock has declined 29.8% over the past three months, significantly underperforming the SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) 12% returns over the same time frame.

In the long term, INTC is down 39.6% YTD, and the shares have declined 10.5% over the past 52 weeks. In comparison, the XSD gained 13.1% in 2024 and rallied 15.3% over the past year.

To confirm the bearish price trend, INTC has been trading below its 50-day and 200-day moving average since early April.

Intel's recent underperformance is attributed to a decade-long lag in semiconductor investment, leading to a tech gap compared to rivals. The company reported Q1 earnings results in line with expectations, with revenue rising 8.6% year over year to $12.72 billion and non-GAAP profit improving to $0.10 per share from a loss of $0.04 last year. However, its next quarter revenue guidance of $13 billion fell 4.4% below analysts' estimates. On May 8, Intel shares declined by 2.9% after the U.S. revoked its license to sell chips to Huawei, intensifying the tech cold war.

Highlighting the contrast in performance, one of INTC's competitors, Broadcom Inc. (AVGO), has outperformed INTC and XSD, gaining 54.1% on a YTD basis

Given the recent weakness in the stock price, analysts are cautious about INTC's prospects. The stock has a consensus rating of "Hold" from 34 analysts in coverage. The mean price target of $39.49 reflects a 28.4% premium to current levels.
