The Arizona Cardinals’ season opener is Sunday against the Washington Commanders, who were previously the Washington Football Team and Washington Redskins.
Their history is long. Their all-time series dates back to 1932. Washington has dominated the all-time series, leading 76-47-2. But the Cardinals won the last matchup and have won three of the last five meetings.

2020: Cardinals 30, Football Team 15
The Cardinals started the season 2-0 with a 30-15 win. Kyler Murray rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another. Arizona outgained Washington 438 yards to 316 as the defense sacked Dwayne Haskins four times.
2018: Redskins 24, Cardinals 6
This was the head coaching debut for Steve Wilks and the beginning of a 3-13 season. The Cardinals mustered only 216 yards of offense. They trailed 21-0 at halftime.
2017: Redskins 20, Cardinals 15
With Blaine Gabbert at quarterback in December, the Cardinals mustered only five field goals against Washington. They held Washington only 218 yards but Kirk Cousins had two touchdown passes and the Cardinals only gained 286 yards and turned the ball over twice.
2016: Cardinals 31, Redskins 23
Carson Palmer passed for 300 yards and three touchdowns, the last of which was a 42-yard score to J.J. Nelson to seal the game after Washington pulled within one point.
2014: Cardinals 30, Redskins 20
Rashad Johnson had a pick-six in the final 20 seconds of the game to seal the win. It was the third interception of the game Kirk Cousins threw. Carson Palmer threw two touchdown passes and had 250 passing yards in the win.
