Tottenham have seemingly missed out on the transfers of both Adama Traore and Luis Diaz, which isn't likely to be a positive for the likes of Harry Kane.
The England captain has scored in every competition Tottenham have featured in this season, scoring 13 goals in his 30 appearances so far.
Kane had a slow start to the season, after a move to Manchester City in the summer failed to materialise, which came on the back of the Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy at Wembley.
However, in the last few games the 28-year-old has begun to look like he is finding his form again and recorded a goal and an assist in Spurs' 3-2 victory over Leicester.
Before the talking point of Kane's potential move to the Etihad in the summer, his interview with Gary Neville highlighted some of his honest thoughts about his future, which he said would ultimately be decided by him and not the club.
"I’m sure that [Levy] will want to set out the plan of where he sees it but ultimately it’s going to be down to me and how I feel and what’s going to be the best for me and my career this moment in time," Kane explained in The Overlap podcast, which was released last year.
"I don’t want to have come to the end of my career and have any regrets. So, I want to be the best that I can be. I’ve said before, I’d never say that I’d stay at Spurs for the rest of my career. I’d never say that I would leave Spurs.
"I’m not afraid to say that I want to be the best. I’m not afraid to say I want to try get on the level that [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Lionel] Messi got to. You know, that’s my ultimate goal.
"That’s my aim, to be winning trophies season in, season out. Scoring 50, 60, 70 goals season in, season out. That’s the standard I want to set myself."
Kane clearly highlighted that he had high ambitions for himself and what he wants to achieve and one of these things was trophies, which he has failed to secure during his time at Spurs.
After Nuno Espirito Santo failed to make the required impact during his short time at Tottenham, the Lilywhites managed to bring in Antonio Conte.
The Italian is a manager with proven success, winning league titles at Chelsea, Juventus and Inter Milan, which brings some hope for Tottenham fans.
The 52-year-old lost his first Premier League game in charge of Spurs, after being unbeaten in nine, when the Lilywhites faced Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Despite improvements seen both on and off the pitch since Conte's arrival, the game against Thomas Tuchel's side clearly showed the difference in quality between the two sides.
Tottenham need some fresh faces to be able to make this step-up in quality, in order to try and give the Italian the best possible chance of leading his side to success.
However with Dusan Vlahovic set to join Juventus, Liverpool swooping in for Luis Diaz and Barcelona securing a loan move for Adama Traore, it hasn't been a great few weeks for Spurs in the January transfer window.
There are now just days left and Daniel Levy hasn't left himself with much time to secure some much needed incomings for the north London club.
There are now reports of Tottenham being interested in Dejan Kulusevski but work still needs to be done to secure the deal.
Spurs have struggled with their creativity in the middle of the field this season and the service to Kane hasn't been as effective as he would hope, which is where the new signings may have helped.
Diaz has scored 14 goals and registered five assists in 18 league appearances for Porto so far this season and could have had a positive impact on the Tottenham team.
Not only could the Colombian have provided goals himself but his assists suggest he would have been able to link up well with Kane.
Traore has undoubted pace and strength but has been criticised for his end product, scoring just one goal this season and often lacking quality in the final third.
However, if the Spaniard did make the move to Spurs and play in the right wing-back position he was going to be brought in for, there would've been no one better than Conte to try and improve his quality in the attacking half of the pitch.
This would've again provided the England captain with someone who, if improved, could produce passes and crosses to him that he could have slotted home.
The clubs that have beaten Tottenham to the potential transfers are ones which have had more success in recent times, in turn making them a more attractive prospect.
Spurs do have a world-class manager and facilities to attract players but aren't playing European football and despite their games in hand, are currently seventh in the league.
If Levy is not able to get in some top-class players in the January window, it confirms Spurs' failure to bring in those players that are needed to help them achieve their high ambitions.
Without these required signings, it almost clarifies Kane's thoughts on the club and their ambitions, so not only are January signings important to help Conte lead Tottenham to success, but also to prove to the current squad players that there is this ambition and ability to sign top players.
