How Everton squad reacted behind the scenes to 'special' Chelsea atmosphere

Everton defender Michael Keane has revealed that the squad refrained from "silly" celebrations in the aftermath of their recent win over Chelsea at Goodison Park.

Sunday's match ended 1-0 courtesy of Richarlison's strike early in the second half, capitalising on a mistake from Cesar Azpilicueta. Thanks to some incredible saves from Jordan Pickford as the match went on, the Blues managed to secure what could be a crucial three points in their fight against relegation.

Frank Lampard's side were welcomed to the stadium with some amazing scenes outside. Thousands of fans arrived early to loudly show their support for the club with chants, flags, banners and flares.

Keane admitted that those pre-match gestures gave the squad a huge lift to put in a strong performance. But, despite playing well and securing the win, he also revealed that the celebrations in the dressing room did not go over-the-top.

The centre-back told Sky Sports: "It was special, the whole day. Coming into Goodison on the coach and seeing thousands of fans there chanting, with flares, banging on the bus, just genuine passion you can see on their faces - it gave the lads a massive lift.

"To then produce like the lads did on the pitch and send the lads home happy, it was a special feeling. In the changing room afterwards everyone was buzzing, everyone was happy.

"But we're trying to stay calm, we've got five games left to go, we're going to need a few more wins. We can't get carried away, we've got to focus now, this whole week, on the Leicester game on Sunday.

"It wasn't silly celebrations, we know it's just three points. Three points in the right direction for us.

"Yeah the occasion was really good and amazing to be a part of, but we know it's just three points. There was definitely no over-the-top celebrations. We were definitely happy with how we played, and with the result.

"But we know, the day after, we have to focus on the next game. That's what we've got to do until the end of the season."

Everton face Leicester City away from home on Sunday as they bid to pick up more points to aid their relegation fight. The Blues are two points behind both Leeds United and Burnley as they sit 18th in the Premier League table at the time of writing.
