How early do I need to arrive at Dublin airport if travelling to Spain, Portugal or other EU spots?

Security and baggage queues remain long as travellers embark on their early morning flights at Dublin Airport.

Chaos ensued as several passengers continued to face long security queues on Friday morning.

If you are travelling to Spain, Portugal, or other EU spots, it’s wise to follow updated advice.

It comes as Leo Varadkar issued updated advice warning anyone planning on taking a trip abroad, to plan ahead and give themselves extra time.

The past two weekends have been mayhem for airport staff, and several passengers missed their flights due to the lengthy queues.

Ahead of the Easter weekend, the Dublin Airport Authority released a five-point plan aimed at tackling the Security queues through increased resourcing, increased training capacity, deploying extra staff, communication, and twenty for hour security.

The shortage of security screening staff is the key contributory factor to the current difficulties and is re-doubling its efforts to recruit additional staff.

However, with Dublin Airport set to get busier over the coming weeks, passengers are being reminded to arrive at the airport a minimum of three and a half hours prior to their departure time.

The company is temporarily re-assigning a number of Cork-based security staff to Dublin in a manner that will assist the operation at Dublin Airport, without compromising Cork.

As part of the plan, the airport is keeping security open 24/7 in Terminal 1, to reduce the build-up of queues in advance of early morning departures when the airport is at its busiest.

Approximately 600 office-based staff are being deployed to support the operation in Departures at Dublin Airport during the weekends and at known peak periods.

The operations plan further highlights that Dublin Airport will continue to use social media platforms to notify passengers with updated pre-travel advisory information.

The advice states: “Dublin Airport advises you to allow plenty of time for your airport journey. That’s up to three and a half hours before your departure time from Dublin Airport.”

At lunchtime, passengers shared mixed experiences of getting through security online.

One said: “I’m at @DublinAirport and it’s super busy but also extremely efficient. I passed all security controls in literally 7 minutes. Kudos to the team for the excellent job!”

A second said: "@DublinAirport why are you advising to arrive at least 3 1/2 hours before your flight due to security delays, yet check in is not opening until 2 hours before flight?! Waiting here in a queue with a child for 1 1/2 hours."

While another said: “@DublinAirport though the Fast Track security queue in 10mins. Great service! #dublinairport”.
