How early do I need to arrive at Cardiff airport?

Passengers at some of major UK airports are being warned to arrive as much as four hours before the flight is due to take off. Manchester Airport in particular has been hit by staffing issues, with a string of measures being brought in to ease the disruption, which has led to flight cancellations and chaos in terminals.

The city's mayor, Andy Burnham, said some airlines have even told passengers to drop off their bags the night before their flight to avoid long queues.

People are also being urged to arrive three or hours ahead of take off, with extra police presence stationed at the airport.

While there have not been the same type of queues at Cardiff Airport, chief executive officer Spencer Birns is urging passengers to give themselves plenty of time.

He says: "We recommend people arrive early because there are extra checks, particularly regarding destinations and the different rules for different destinations, and that slows down the check in process slightly.

"From a security perspective, our teams are ready. We have recruited heavily over the winter, and we have got the teams ready and trained. We are looking forward to greeting customers through the door in a meaningful way."

TUI , which flies several flights from Cardiff to holiday destinations , is advising customers to arrive up to three hours before departure, while Andy Prendergast, national secretary of the GMB which represents the majority of airport staff, advises people arrive p to four hours before. You can see the destinations from Cardiff here.

A spokeswoman for TUI said: "TUI is advising customers to arrive up to three hours before departure and to allow extra time to go through security before going to their boarding gate. We have an entry requirements hub on our TUI site with up to date requirements for each destination we travel to."

Mr Prendergast says: "You need to get to the airport as early as possible. And please remember as well, that they are understaffed and overworked, and they're doing their best and I know it's very frustrating for travellers, but these people are working really hard to get you through and we would ask that you treat them with a bit of respect and dignity."
