LABOUR MPs abstained as the SNP won a vote in the Commons today calling for compensation for Waspi women.
Stephen Flynn used Parliament’s 10-minute rule to introduce a bill which would force the Government to pay women who were unaware of rushed changes to the state pension age between £1000 to £2950.
He won by 105 votes in favour with no MPs voting against.
The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman last year recommended women be compensated after finding that the Government had failed to properly communicate the equalisation of the state pension age for women born in the 1950s.
Despite campaigning with Waspi women in opposition, Labour ruled out compensation after coming to power, saying it would be too expensive.
But Scottish Labour were put in a difficult position after Anas Sarwar’s MSPs voted to urge the UK Government to compensate Waspi women.
It meant that Scottish Labour MPs were faced with the option of going against their Holyrood comrades, going against the UK Government, or abstaining.
On Tuesday afternoon, Flynn was granted permission to bring forward his bill, with Labour MPs mostly abstaining.
