How did Meat Loaf get his iconic name: Music legend dies aged 74

It's been announced that music legend Meat Loaf died at 74 years old after a huge music career through six decades.

The star's death was announced through a statement on Facebook, including that he was surrounded by close friends and family.

The musician changed his name more than once in his lifetime but was known by his fans as Meat Loaf which went on to become his usual name.

Meat Loaf was actually born Marvin Lee Aday but he went on to legally change his name to Michael Lee Aday which eventually turned into Meat Loaf.

He once explained in a CNN interview with Piers Morgan how he managed to end up with such a unique name.

Piers asked him why he had the bizarre name and what made him want to change it.

Meat Loaf first said that when he was a child he was 'so big' that he wasn't able to fit in jeans so instead he wore 'pleated pants' when he first started school.

He first wanted to change his name when he saw an advert for Levi's come on the TV which said: "Poor fat Marvin can't wear Levi's."

But after this it seemed that people stopped calling him Marvin due to the harsh nature of the commercial.

This caused him to go and see a judge in 1984 when he told them the story and why this made him want to have a different name.

Normally the process of changing his name to Michael would take about six weeks according to the judge but due to the sensitive nature of the reason he rushed it though straight away.

Meat Loaf went on to say that he was often called 'meat' growing up and he had Meat Loaf on his passport when they were first touring Bat Out Of Hell but this caused some difficulties.

During a trip to Germany when he showed his passport he ended up being kept in immigration for six hours so at that point he decided to still be legally called Michael.

The singer died on Thursday night, with the statement saying his loved ones are 'heartbroken'.

The statement said: "Our hearts are broken to announce that the incomparable Meat Loaf passed away tonight surrounded by his wife Deborah, daughters Pearl and Amanda and close friends.

"His amazing career spanned 6 decades that saw him sell over 100 Million albums worldwide and star in over 65 movies, including 'Fight Club', 'Focus', 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' and 'Wayne’s World.'

"'Bat Out of Hell' remains one of the top 10 selling albums of all time.

"We know how much he meant to so many of you and we truly appreciate all of the love and support as we move through this time of grief in losing such an inspiring artist and beautiful man."

"We thank you for your understanding of our need for privacy at this time."

It finished with: "From his heart to your souls…don’t ever stop rocking!"
