The twisted legacy of Ian Brady lives on as police are currently digging on Saddleworth Moor for victim Keith Bennett, whose body was never found, after discovering a skull.
Fifty eight years after his disappearance, Greater Manchester Police are digging in an area of land after they were contacted by the representative of an author who had been "researching the murder of Keith Bennett".
Force Review Officer Martin Bottomley added on Thursday (September 29): "Following direct contact with the author, we were informed that he had discovered what he believes are potential human remains in a remote location on the Moors".
For decades, Brady and his accomplice Myra Hindley’s horrifying crimes haunted the country after they buried five children in the Moors.
They buried the bodies in the vast open space around Saddleworth, near Manchester, and there has been a hunt for evidence ever since.
In 1965, Brady was apprehended and on May 6, 1966, he and Hindley were convicted of killing Edward Evans and Lesley Ann Downey.
Brady was also convicted of murdering John Kilbride, while Hindley was convicted as an accessory after the fact.
He spent the rest of his life in jail on perpetual suicide watch until 2017 when he died in an agonising way.
How did Ian Brady die?
Ian Brady died on May 15, 2017, with the most-mortem revealing that his official cause of death was cor pulmonale and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Cor pulmonale is the abnormal enlargement of the right side of the heart as a result of disease of the lungs or the pulmonary blood vessels.
COPD is the name for a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties.
After his death, it was revealed that he had been dying of the terminal lung and chest condition.
He was bedridden for two years prior to his death and receive end-of-life care that is given to all terminal cancer patients.
A High Court judge rules that Brady’s body would receive "no music and no ceremony," after he wanted his ashes scattered to "witchcraft" music.
He showed no signs of remorse all the way to his dying breath as he refused to reveal any information on where Keith Bennett’s body had been buried.
On November 2, 2017, Brady’s ashes were scattered in the Irish sea at an undisclosed location near Liverpool.
Since then, police vowed to keep the investigation into Keith’s death ongoing, which has helped lead to the recent discovery.
Who were Ian Brady’s victims?
Ian Brady was responsible for the deaths of five children, four of whom were sexually assaulted.
He worked with Hindley to commit these inhuman acts, with her luring the children in before they drove them to the Moors, or their home.
Brady would kill them either by strangling them or by slashing their throats.
Their victims were Pauline Reade, 16 John Kilbride, 12 Keith Bennett, 12 Lesley Ann Downey, 10 Edward Evans, 17.
