How Cristiano Ronaldo's exit impacts on Newcastle and Manchester United's transfer plans

Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United departure could have a knock on effect on Newcastle United's January transfer business. The Portuguese star has been tentatively linked with a move to St. James' Park, despite Eddie Howe ruling out a move for the 37-year-old.

The Red Devils announced that Ronaldo would leave the club with immediate effect last week, following on from his explosive interview with Piers Morgan. The club were left with no choice but to sanction his exit after he publicly slammed several aspects of the club, including the Glazer family, Erik ten Hag and his team-mates.

However, the Portuguese forward has now left Erik ten Hag's side short of options up front and they could turn a Newcastle United target to fill that spot. Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Aston Villa and the Magpies have been linked with a move for Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram, with Man United now set to wade in on talks.

According to Ignazio Genuardi, the Newcastle and Villa are two of the Premier League outfits interested in signing Marcus Thuram, with Borussia Monchengladbach asking for a reported £8.6million in January, with his contract expiring at the end of the season. However, Rudy Galetti claims the Red Devils have joined them in eyeing a deal for the Frenchman after their No 7's departure.

The 25-year-old has notched 10 goals and three assists in the Bundesliga this season; only RB Leipzig forwardChristopher Nkunku has scored more times this season, with 12 goals.
