How Chelsea vs Liverpool will be decided in the event of a draw after Carabao Cup rule change

Chelsea and Liverpool meet in the final of the Carabao Cup this afternoon in what is sure to be a tightly-fought contest.

Both meetings between the two teams have ended in draws this season. Kai Havertz scored a wonderful header at Anfield in a 1-1 draw while Mateo Kovacic scored a screamer at Stamford Bridge.

If Thomas Tuchel were to secure the cup, it would be his fourth piece of silverware won in just over a year as Chelsea manager.

Within months of replacing Frank Lampard he had led the Blues to their second Champions League title, before subsequently securing the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.

Manchester City have dominated the tournament in past seasons so it will be interesting to see how a final without Pep Guardiola's men plays out.

One question that many fans will be wondering is how the game will play out should it end in a draw after 90 minutes.

History has shown us that this is a likely outcome when these two teams meet, after all.

This season did see extra time scrapped in rounds one to five of the tournament, with games instead going straight to penalties - a method Chelsea used to beat both Aston Villa and Southampton.

However, this time they will have extra time to contend with should the game end in a draw after 90 minutes. The period was reintroduced for the semi-finals too but neither tie required it.

It is something that both Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp will have to have taken into account during their preparations for the game, particularly when it comes to using substitutions.
