How Chelsea can use Reece James to persuade Graham Potter favourite to sign deal

It's been a good week for people that have stocks in Mason Mount. The Englishman registered three assists in the space of three days, won a penalty, and did all of that whilst playing just 135 minutes.

After a slow start to the season he has come into his own under new manager Graham Potter and is already producing the type of performances that fans expected from him after a stellar 2021/22 campaign in which he registered double figures for goals and assists in the league alone.

Mount's early season struggles were part of a wider malaise for the club with most of the squad struggling for fluidity or form, but Potter has corrected that quickly and has seen his side string together four fine wins with three clean sheets in a row too.

For Mount, he now has five assists in 12 matches this season, although he is yet to score, the increase in his impact on matches is a brilliant sign, especially under Potter who has put faith in the 23-year-old. Mount is the only outfield player to start each match under Potter and is once again finding the effective pockets of space in midfield that he thrived in last season.

It is the third manager, on top of Gareth Southgate, who has turned to Mount and sees him as a valuable first choice solution, and demonstrates his importance to the squad and its structure. In a move by Todd Boehly to reward the best performing players, he is high on the list of members that deserve a new contract and talks are understood to have taken place.

Mount's current deal doesn't expire until 2024 but cementing him to a long-term contract as part of a further recruitment drive is something that the new owners are keen on implementing. Following Reece James' own six-year deal, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2028 amid interest from Real Madrid, former Chelsea full-back Glen Johnson does not expect Mount to be a tough player to keep.

Speaking to Bettingodds.com, Johnson said: "I believe it’s a matter of time before Mason signs a new contract at Chelsea. I believe it will be an easy deal to do because he’s Chelsea through and through and I can’t imagine that he wants to go anywhere else. It may take a little bit longer but I can’t imagine him doing anything else other than re-signing.”

James' deal more than doubled his wages and reflects his recent levels of performance as one of the standout members of the squad for at least 18 months. Mount has been on a similar run of form outside of his slow start, but his return to the spotlight will only increase the desire to tie him down.

Having joined the club in 2005 aged just six, Mount has forged a career for the club that developed him and was part of the first true group to properly progress through Cobham, alongside James. He has already won the Champions League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup, as well as playing integral roles in Chelsea sides that have reached three straight FA Cup finals and the Carabao Cup final as well.

Given the bond that Mount shares with Chelsea, James and his teammates, it won't be a surprise to see him commit to a longer timeframe at SW6 and fans will hope he can join Armando Broja and James in declaring their long-term goals to the club.
