How Boston’s moving Marcus Smart to point guard helped fuel the Celtics’ historic turnaround

From the very start of his career playing basketball to the moment the Boston Celtics picked him up with the sixth overall pick of the 2014 NBA draft, veteran guard Marcus Smart had run the point on the teams he’d played in high school and at Oklahoma State.

But the Flower Mound native had to adapt his game on the fly on joining the ranks of the NBA with elite floor generals ahead of him in the rotation until the events leading into the 2021-22 season required Smart to make the move to the 1 for the Celtics. He of course embraced it whole-heartedly given it is his strongest position on the court, but it had been such a long time since he’d played it that many had doubts of he’d be the best fit for Boston that season.

We have since seen Smart put himself in position to be Defensive Player of the Year on one end, and upping his passing game on the other to help vault the Celtics from a middle-of-the-pack purgatory to true contender status.

Check out the clip embedded above to see the video NBC Sports Boston put together documenting Smart’s rise with Boston as a point guard.
