On March 23 local time in Egypt, the Ever Given, a massive container ship operated by Evergreen Marine, ran aground in the Suez Canal, jamming a major trade route between Europe and Asia.
In 2020, around 19,000 ships passed through the busy waterway, according to the Suez Canal Authority. They were responsible for 12% of world trade last year.
Shipping officials say the stranded ship was refloated at around 3 p.m. yesterday after rescue teams worked for six days and nights. It is said to be one of the largest marine salvage operations in modern times.
Ever Given, which was stuck in the Suez Canal for nearly a week, is one of the largest container ships in operation. It is even bigger than the Nimitz Class aircraft carrier, the biggest warship in service until the USS Gerald R. Ford (337m) was commissioned in 2017.
If we make Ever Given stand on its stern, it is taller than Kaohsiung’s tallest building, the 85 Sky Tower, and just 108 meters shorter than Taipei 101.
If we place Ever Given on Dunhua South Rd., one of Taipei’s main avenues, with the bow on the edge of the Renai Circle, the ship’s stern will almost fall on Zhongxiao East Rd., close to Zhongxiao Dunhua station on the Blue Line.
