How Arsenal's Kroenke rebuild led by Mikel Arteta has influenced Chelsea's Graham Potter plan

Arsenal showed faith and stood by Mikel Arteta at the end of last season despite the club missing out on a top-four spot. The Gunners have invested heavily in signing young talents that have now developed into high-quality players as they continue their Premier League title challenge against Manchester City.

The Spaniard has been key in changing the atmosphere and mood at the Emirates Stadium, proving that if a manager is given time then they can build a special team. Chelsea are at the start of a new era after Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital completed a £4billion takeover at Stamford Bridge, swiftly followed by the appointment of Graham Potter as Thomas Tuchel's successor.

The Blues have spent over £600million on new signings in Boehly's first season as co-owner, bringing in the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, Raheem Sterling, Wesley Fofana and Co. Some have criticised Chelsea's mass spending spree and with results on the pitch not going according to plan, pressure is building on the ownership and Potter.

Chelsea currently sit eight positions lower than Arsenal in the league table and are having a poor season by their standards. The Blues have won just one game in their last seven Premier League fixtures but the new owners remain committed to backing Potter looking forward.

According to The Athletic, the Chelsea leadership team feel that with Potter arriving mid-season to take over a squad that needed such a big overhaul meant success was always very unlikely in the short term and that there is still a lot of change to come to what is now a youthful team. The ownership model also feel that the club have been very unlucky with injuries too, though many key players such as £600million on new signings in Boehly's first season have recently returned to full fitness.

The success of Arteta at Arsenal with a young squad after a mixed start is also seen as a reassuring sign that the Blues will eventually find themselves challenging at the top of the league and in Europe once again. The report added that the board feel that it will take some time for all the new signings to gel and understand Potter’s tactics and methods, though further additions are expected in the summer along with plenty of outgoings.

The Gunners have spent over £100million in the previous two summer transfer windows and just three years into Arteta's reign at the Emirates Stadium they now find themselves performing at the same level, if not better, than City. It remains to be seen as to what Arsenal can achieve this season, but Chelsea are hoping they can follow a similar trajectory under Potter along with the huge financial backing available from the owners.
