Arsenal are planning to use fireworks, banners, red smoke and a stadium-wide display to create a “special atmosphere” for their Champions League showdown against Real Madrid.

The Gunners are hosting the holders at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg of their quarter-final tie on Tuesday night.

Manager Mikel Arteta has issued a rallying cry to fans and encouraged them to get to the ground early to support the team.

The club have put in work to ensure that Arsenal can create a memorable atmosphere for what is their first competitive meeting with Real Madrid since 2006.

Red smoke and fireworks will be used pre-match, while there will also be two tifo banners on display.

Arsenal also plan to create a red and white display across the whole of the stadium.

Home fans will find a red or white plastic bag on their seat on Tuesday night, which when held up will transform the Emirates.

Supporters can keep the commemorative bags or there will be recycling points at the stadium.

Fans have been encouraged to get to the ground early and Arsenal have organised a “buy one and get one on us” offer on drinks for the first hour that the stadium is open.

“We’re going to put all the ingredients, everything that is in our hands, to play the game that we want and to take the game in the direction that we want,” said Arteta.

“In order to achieve that, we’re going to need our people playing every single ball with us. That’s going to make a huge difference because that’s something that is really needed.

“At these stages, you need your home stadium to create a very, very special atmosphere to generate momentum.

“I encourage them (the Arsenal fans) to come very early to the warm-up and create those nights that we haven’t lived many of at the Emirates.

“I encourage everybody to go there to play the game with us. Not to be there watching it, but to play the game with us.

“Be super convinced. 8pm, 11 players, 60,000 people, really super convinced that we are ready to win and to beat them.”
