How Amazon Prime have moved to ensure Premier League football streams run smoothly

Amazon has pledged to treat every Premier League match like ‘a big game’ and, as such, it has left no stone unturned when it comes to production.

Presenters, pundits and commentators — Gabby Logan and Jim Rosenthal are part of the team, while pundits include the likes of Alan Shearer, Harry Redknapp, Michael Owen, Peter Schmeichel and Thierry Henry — will be in an on-site studio or pitchside for every match Amazon broadcasts, with coverage starting 30 minutes before kick-off, half-time analysis and post-match reaction.

For viewers watching on web, mobile and Fire TV, they also have the ability to utilise the ‘X-Ray function’, which allows them to track live match statistics and catch up on key highlights as the game unfolds.

On December 4 and Boxing Day, fans will also be able to watch the Goals Centre, which will allow viewers to watch every goal from every game as soon as they have been scored.

Shortly after the final whistle in every match, a two- to three-minute highlights package will be available. Amazon will then release a 30-minute highlights package and a complete re-run of each game at midnight on the same day that will stay on the service for one week.

What are the potential problems?

(Amazon)

The sheer number of viewers wanting to watch is the greatest concern, particularly on Boxing Day. Those fixtures are expected to be one of the biggest streaming events in the world and there are fears picture quality could be impacted, while another possible issue revolves around a time delay in goals being scored to them being broadcast.

Will Amazon cope with the demand?

(Amazon)

We will not know the answer until tonight and later this week, when Amazon broadcasts PL matches for the first time. There have been issues with their tennis coverage in the past, with customers complaining about a low frame rate and jerky footage. Amazon is confident, however, it has learned from past mistakes.

What has Amazon done to ensure it all runs smoothly?

Amazon has been in constant dialogue with the UK’s main internet providers to ensure the necessary bandwidth is available. It has also decided to work with production partners who have existing expertise, namely BT Sport and Sunset+Vine. It has also increased the number of cameras involved, with over 350 at stadiums.
