How a Rangers title winner helped Mohun Bagan secure domestic double in India

What looked from the outside like a left-field move to India has turned into a trophy-laden success story for former Rangers forward Greg Stewart.

The 35-year-old added another piece of silverware to his collection at the weekend, playing a game-changing role as Mohun Bagan Super Giant completed an impressive domestic double in dramatic fashion.

Stewart — who left Ibrox in 2021 after lifting the Scottish Premiership title under Steven Gerrard — came off the bench with his side trailing Bengaluru 1-0 in the Indian Super League Cup Final.

And while ex-Hibernian striker Jason Cummings, who also had a short stint at Rangers, had drawn Bagan level, it was Stewart’s moment of quality that ultimately turned the tie on its head.

Stewart rolled back the years with a trademark piece of composure and vision, teeing up Australian international Jamie Maclaren for a 96th-minute winner to spark wild celebrations.

The victory sealed a memorable cup and league double for Mohun Bagan, who had already secured the ISL Shield — awarded to the league’s regular-season winners — a few weeks earlier. Stewart had his fingerprints all over that triumph too, scoring in the decisive match to wrap up top spot.

While his future at Bagan remains uncertain, with his contract due to expire this summer and injury concerns reportedly fuelling doubts over a renewal, his impact on the pitch hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Supporters were quick to pay tribute to the former Ibrox man online after another decisive contribution in a big moment.

For a player who was always highly rated for his technical quality during his time in Scotland, Stewart’s move to India may have raised a few eyebrows at the time — but the switch has proven to be anything but obscure.

Now with more league and cup honours on his CV, Stewart has underlined that his winning mentality, sharpened at Ibrox, is still very much intact.
