Houston Texans 2023 offseason workout dates: First day of DeMeco Ryans era starts April 11

The Houston Texans have been working tirelessly to assemble the best roster possible for rookie coach DeMeco Ryans as he takes over his original draft team.

The Texans have had double-digit losing seasons for the past three years, and are at a nadir not experienced since the founding of the franchise. Ryans was part of the movement to pull the Texans out of the pit when they selected him as their linebacker in Round 2 of the 2006 NFL draft.

Ryans and his coaching staff know when they will finally get their hands on the players to establish the culture of the turnaround. Here are the dates for the Texans’ offseason workouts.

The Texans have an advantage for the third straight year. Because they have a coaching staff that is in its first year with the team, they can start their offseason workouts earlier. The first day of the Ryans era starts April 11 with Phase 1 of the NFL’s offseason workout program as outlined in Article 21 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Phase 1 will have the Texans’ activities limited to meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation only.

The on-field work with coaches doesn’t start until Phase 2, which consists of the next three weeks of the program. Houston will hold a voluntary minicamp April 25-27. The last day of the voluntary minicamp is the first day of the 2023 NFL draft.

In Phase 2, the Texans go at a walkthrough pace and have individual or group drills. The offense and defense cannot line up against one another yet, and there is no live contact.

Rookie minicamp will be either May 5-8 or May 12-15 for the Texans.

The Texans also can start their rookie football development program on May 15. The program runs for seven weeks, and there can’t be any activities may be held on weekends — rookie minicamp notwithstanding.

During the third phase of the Texans’ offseason program, they finally hold organized team activities, which will be held May 22-23, May 25, May 30-31, June 2, June 5-6, and June 8.

During these sessions, which are the next four weeks of the offseason program, the Texans have 10 days of OTAs. There is still no live contact, which means more “basketball on grass,” but the offense and defense can go against one another in 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills.

The Texans’ minicamp is June 13-14.
