Witnesses reported first seeing the huge emergency services response at around 10am on Thursday, with one local saying it was 'worrying'. It is understood the scale of the emergency services response increased throughout the day.

Fire crews were also called to the scene (MEN)

Pictures also show bomb disposal vehicles and forensics officers at the scene of the incident. Greater Manchester Police have said they are still working to 'establish all the facts' surrounding the incident and have been approached for more details.

Superintendent Zeashan Nasim, from GMP's Stockport Division said: "This operation is part of our commitment to keeping residents of Greater Manchester safe. Our officers are currently working hard to establish all of the facts and will remain at the scene while this work is ongoing.

"While we have asked some residents to leave their properties, this is as a precaution and there is not believed to be any wider threat to the public. There will be some road closures and we thank local residents for their patience while officers go about their business."
