Houseplant of the week: shark fin

 shark fin houseplant

Why will I love it?
A native of central Africa, Dracaena masoniana is known as whale fin or shark fin for its long, stiff leaves. They grow in a rosette formation but houseplants often feature as a single large leaf, mottled dark and pastel green, with a band of white and a thinner line of brown on the sometimes crinkled edge.

Light or shade?
This versatile plant thrives both in bright full sun and partial shade.

Where should I put it?
Dracaenas tolerate humidity and a range of light levels, so it would be happy in your shady bathroom or by a bright window in your living room.

How do I keep it alive?
This plant is mostly adored for its tolerance of neglect. It needs free-draining compost, and a pot with a drainage hole to prevent root rot. Allow the compost to dry out between waterings. The temperature and humidity of an average room suit it fine, but it should be protected from draughts and temperatures below 10C.

Did you know …
Like many Dracaena species, the shark fin plant is known for its air-purifying abilities. It can help remove indoor toxins such as formaldehyde, xylene and toluene, contributing to a healthier indoor environment.
