Why will I love it?
The fascinating resurrection plant (Selaginella lepidophylla) is a marvel of nature that can survive extreme dehydration for years by curling into a seemingly lifeless brown, dry ball, only to “resurrect” itself and turn green again when exposed to water.
Light or shade?
It thrives in bright, indirect light.
Where should I put it?
Place this plant on a desk or windowsill where you won’t miss its transformation.
How do I keep it alive?
This plant doesn’t require any soil. To wake it, place the dried plant in a shallow dish or bowl with pebbles and water – it will begin unfurling within hours. It is sensitive to chlorine, so be sure to use rainwater or distilled water. Let it dry out completely every few days to prevent root rot. During its active phase, mist it occasionally to keep the fronds hydrated. It prefers a warm environment of 18C-29C.
Did you know?
This plant is native to the Chihuahuan desert, of northern Mexico and southwest US, and other deserts in Central America. The Aztecs used it in rituals to symbolise renewal and protection, celebrating its seemingly magical ability to return to life. The plant can remain dormant for months or even years, making it a living symbol of endurance and adaptability.
